This 10-inch compound miter saw from Delta is a sturdy, well-balanced, smooth-cutting saw perfect for use on the job site or in a small shop. Its safety-conscious design includes an electric brake, a see-through retracting blade guard, and a dust and chip collection system. The blade tilts 45 degrees to the left, and the table pivots a full 45 degrees in both directions. This saw has a maximum bite of 1-3/4 by 4 inches when set to a full 45-by-45-degree compound cut (just enough for two-by-fours). It’s also capable of through cuts on four-by-fours and two-by-sixes at straight 90-degree crosscuts. Delta offers another 10-inch compound miter saw–the 36-220–at a slightly lower price, but that model has a smaller bite and lacks the comfortable horizontal handle of this one.

Other compound miter saws (including a 12-inch model and a sliding saw from Delta) offer a bigger bite, but considering the exceptionally good price on this model, it’s hard to find another saw that offers as much value. The 36-225 is a little heavier and more challenging to move around a job site than some competing portable saws, but its weight is due to Delta’s solid construction, and the tool has a level of stability and accuracy we think is worth the extra heft. Delta priced this saw to attract home users, but they built it to withstand the rigors of professional use. Even the beefiest miter saw fits without fussing, and it holds an impressive 500 pounds. Mounting is not complicated, even if the holes on your saw base don’t line up with the predrilled holes on this base. All you need is a subtable of 3/4-inch plywood and you’re set. Whether you mount your saw directly to the saw stand or to the plywood first, removing it is a cinch. And working at your saw on this stand is even better. Riding on a horizontal double-rail system, Makita’s 10-inch dual sliding compound miter saw is one smooth operator. Both rails are self-cleaning and sli de on linear ball bearings. The horizontal rail design also seems to give this s aw some extra stability, a feature we appreciate, especially in a saw that bevel s to 45 degrees both ways. Makita’s saw has a vertical grip design with a thumb- activated safety switch and a paddle trigger, and while the vertical design migh t be slightly less ergonomic than the horizontal D-handle, it does allow you to use the saw comfortably with either hand. Plus, the paddle grip makes squeezing the trigger easy no matter how you’re holding the handle.

The saw crosscuts a two-by-twelve at 90 degrees and also has the depth capacity to cut four-by-four material–a feature deck builders, in particular, demand. Th e saw’s table is large, too, giving you plenty of workspace for making wider cro sscuts. The saw’s nine positive stops make it easy to lock in common miters. The miter lock on this saw has a screw handle that is a little more time-consuming than recently popular cam-lock design. We really like the soft start and electri c brake, however; they’re user-friendly features that make a big difference, esp ecially when a job requires a lot of constant, repetitive cuts. The pivot fence adjusts for supporting large stock and flips back for bevel cuts.   Hitachi’s 15-inch miter saw is a heavy-duty tool ideal for people who need to cut big post and beam stock. It has a powerful 15 amp with an electric brake to match its sturdy construction, and can cut material as thick as 4-3/4 inches and as wide as 7-1/2 inches at 0 degrees, and as wide as 5-15/32 at a 45 degree miter. It also comes with a clamp nearly hefty enough to be called a vise for holding the material tight to the fence, and has built-in extension wings to make work with long boards easier. We really like the convenient thumb-operated blade guard lifter that makes it easier to work with big boards that might otherwise cause the guard to hang up. The miter gauge is riveted on, but the numbers and markings are not in relief, so it may need replacing in time as the paint wears off, although the riveted connection will make that replacement a tougher job than it should be.     This is what a miter saw ought to be: accurate, sturdy, powerful, versatile, user-friendly and packed full of cool features.

    If we had to choose a favorite aspect, it would have to be the handle. It’s vertical. It’s horizontal. And it’s a couple of other things in between. It locks quickly and easily into any of four positions, so both lefties and righties have complete comfort and control.

    This saw is beefy: It weighs in at 55 pounds and it’s got a huge 25-1/2-inch base with built-in sliding extensions that bring your total support area to 40 inches. If you’re in the market for a stand for this saw as well, we like both the Bosch TracRac as well as the DeWalt DW723.

    The dual bevel is a great feature, swinging 0 to 47 degrees left and zero to 46 degrees right, with positive bevel stops at 31.6 and 33.9 degrees for flawless crown molding cuts. For miter cuts, the blade swings an impressive 52 degrees left and right. There’s even a micro-fine adjustment here, letting you override a detent by as much as 2 degrees. Now that’s precision.

    We absolutely love the fence on this saw – Bosch calls it a Speed-track sliding fence – because it’s a full 4 inches tall and has a beautifully readable inch-scale on it. It’s perfect for crown molding, handling pieces up to 6 inches wide when angled against the fence.

    We’re suddenly rethinking our earlier statement about our favorite feature on this saw; on second thought, it might well be that all the controls – including the bevel lever – are up front. We’re pretty tired of reaching around a saw body to set a bevel, so this is a most welcome upgrade. Adjustments are so much faster and easier, and all the scales are right up front, too.

    Capacities are generous for a non-slider. With a 0-degree miter and 45-degree right bevel, you can cut a 2-by-6; beveling to the left, it will handle a 2-by-8. With an upright blade, you’ll cut a 4-by-4 with ease.

    And yes, this saw has a laser cutting guide, but unless you really want one, we wouldn’t let that sway a decision on this saw one way or the other. It’s a nice feature if you’re likely to use it, but most of us woodworkers prefer to get a visual on exactly where that blade meets the wood.

    In all, this is a beauty of a saw, with features you aren’t going to find on other saws in its class. And we still can’t pick our favorite between the handle and the up-front controls. It’s all good.–Kris Jensen-Van Heste

    If you’re in the market for a miter saw, we always recommend considering a compound model. A compound miter saw is one on which the blade both tilts (bevels) and rotates (miters) to make miter cuts, allowing you to make compound-angle cuts essential for installing crown molding. This professional-duty machine tilts 45 degrees left and right, allowing you to make bevel cuts at both ends of a board without having to flip the board piece around. Its oversized aluminum worktable rotates 45 degrees to the left and 52 degrees to the right.

    The saw has a built-in laser that clearly highlights cut line for quick, safe, accurate cuts. However, unlike most miter saws, the laser on this Makita model is mounted above the blade, not to the arbor. That means you don’t have to turn on the saw to activate the laser. Another nice feature is that the laser is independently switched, so you can turn it on or off whenever you’d like.

    The tool gauntlet has been thrown, and sawmongers — us included — couldn’t be happier. When we saw the specs on this beauty, we couldn’t wait to give it a run.

    First off, expect to make adjustments out of the box to the fence as well as the tilt LCD reading, but adjustments are simple and then you’re ready to go. We absolutely love the LCD readout! It computes your miter and bevel angles for you, without your having to do the hunch-and-squint over a hard-to-read gauge. It’s about time someone came up with this, and it doesn’t surprise us that it was Hitachi.

    Laser cutting guides aren’t the novelty they were a few years ago, but it’s still a nifty feature, and this one’s clear and bright. One caveat: If you’re cutting molding vertically, your workpiece can actually block the laser because of where it’s positioned. We mention this only because the large pivoting fence raises your fence height to 5-1/8 inches specifically for cutting crown molding vertically. It’s not a huge drawback, we don’t think, but something you should be aware of. Aside from that, we found the laser to be dead-on accurate. We’re partial to a horizontal handle, and this one’s exceedingly nice to grasp because of a soft, comfortable grip. The table’s plenty big and offers great stock support, and unlike other saws in its class, this one has a neatly geared tilt mechanism to take the strain off the user.

    This is a great, accurate saw perfect for the job site, the professional’s shop and especially the home woodworker, who will especially enjoy the LCD bevel and miter display. We bet you’ll be seeing more of these on the market, but remember you saw it here first.–Kris Jensen-Van Heste

    A good table saw comes with a perfectly good miter gauge. But this Incra is perfectly great. It’s precise, versatile, infinitely adjustable and custom-fits to your miter gauge slot.

    You’re probably familiar with the Incra name because of their fantastic dovetail and box-joint-making jigs, but they’ve got a wide product line all with precision at the top of the list.

    An ingenious flip-stop locks down at any point along the fence for repeatable cuts, and it flips out of the way without disturbing your placement if you have other cuts to make as well. The fence actually telescopes out, from a closed length of 18 inches to a fully extended 30 inches for superior stock stability.     Components of a Basic Miter Saw
    Blade
    The blade is the most important part. Sizes ranges from 8, 10 and 12 inches. Larger saw blades make longer cuts. Different blades of a miter saw are used in different applications. Common blades include:
    •Steel blades – An expensive blade that works well in cutting softwood but gets dull quickly in hardwood.
    •Carbide-Tipped Blades – This kind of blade stays sharp much longer than other blades. It is more expensive than steel and high-speed blades.
    •High-Speed Steel Blades – It is harder than steel blade that also stays sharp longer.
    Miter Index
    The miter index gives flexibility to the blade. It angles the blade conveniently depending on the work area. Most miter saws enable exact one-degree incremental changes onto the miter index. It has a stop function to set the miter index to commonly used angles (15 °, 30° and 45 degrees).
    Positive Stops
    These are factory set points allowing a precise cut on specific angles. More positive stops create less setup time.
    Self-Extracting Blade Guard
    It gives a better view of the cutting line by keeping the guard far from the stock. The guard is lowered to cover the blade completely, especially when the saw is raised.
    Electric Brakes
    This reverses the flow of electricity when the trigger has been released. It can stop the blade in two seconds or less, especially when compared to saws without electric brakes.
